Ponderosa High School Camp | Overview | Details | Print Version |
Ponderosa camp is Hume's flagship program and one of the premier youth camps in the United States. Built upon the foundation of introducing high school students to the Gospel of Jesus Christ in a fresh and new way, Ponderosa ministers to over 10,000 high school students each summer with its high-energy recreation, team competitions, practical speakers and seminars, amazing worship, personal and group reflection time, as well as plenty of free-time options. Campers can enjoy swimming in the pool, boating in the lake, or just hanging out with friends at Hume 'N Beans or The Frozen Sombrero. More daring students can try their talents at the Skate Park, Paintball Field, or take a leap of faith on the High Adventure course.

2008 Ponderosa-Theme

“Rise of the Kinematics”

Kinematics is the study of motion without regard to its cause. We desire to give cause to Christian experience and action. This summer we will be discussing the topics of God, Man, Christ, Justification, Discipleship, and Scripture. Our goal is that you walk away from camp with an understanding of these foundational principles of the Christian faith. Our root scripture for the summer will be 2 Timothy 4:1-5. The only option in selecting a genre, which would capture the essence of Kinematics, is… (Wait for it…) ROBOTS!!

“Clunky Colorful Cardboard Contraptions”

Our Super spirit day theme will be titled: “Clunky Colorful Cardboard Contraptions” This summer’s bonus verse will be 2 Timothy 3:1-4:5. If you would like to tackle this verse before you come to camp remember that you have to memorize all the verses throughout the week to be able to get recreation points for this bonus verse.

Andrew Hosier

Hi, my name is Andrew Hosier and I am from the province of Costa Mesa, CA. My life has been quite bland, I have been taking a little break from enlightening my mind and have worked some random jobs to keep my bank account floating above the big goose eggs. I went to Kansas recently for 3 weeks to help out a cousin and that was fantastic. I learned that I can survive in polar conditions and love it. I am working at Hume this summer simply because I grew up loving this place and would love to contribute to other kids being able to have a wonderful time up here while also learning about Jesus and having life changing experiences. I am excited about the opportunity to grow and stretch myself in my spiritual walk while also helping the kids with their own personal walk with Christ.

Jason Shields

My name is Jason Shields. I was born in Hamilton, Bermuda and by sixth grade had lived in 3 different countries outside of the United States. I am 22 years old and currently attending the University of Nevada, Reno. I will be graduating in the fall of 2008 with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing. After that, God only knows, but if I had any say I would love to work at Hume Lake full time. As a high school student I was given the opportunity to go to Hume Lake Christian Camps...my mom made me. I went again the following two years and loved every second of it. Last winter I decided to apply at Hume Lake, knowing only in my craziest dreams I would get the chance to work there. Well, a few months later I was working in Maintenance, raking more pine straw (pine needles) than I had seen in a lifetime. Somehow knowing what I was doing was changing thousands of lives, made me enjoy every minute of that summer. After that summer I knew I loved Hume, and now I am headed back, but not soon enough. This summer I am looking forward to God changing even more lives than last summer and I know everyone will be brought there for a reason. It's going to be a great summer.

Justin Cheney

Well allo, my name is Justin Cheney. I am 24 years old, 25 if you’re reading this on or after July 15th (for the record this is not a birthday plug, I am an honest person and would hate to put lies in my bio). I am currently sitting in the library at San Diego Christian College avoiding doing final papers and writing my Hume bio instead. I live in a 1500 square foot shack (I say shack because walls are not straight, nor is the floor remotely level, and we have bugs…big ones… they speak Dutch and are not very nice). I am in the hiring process with the California Highway Patrol. I once had a motorcycle and crashed, God saved me, and I love Him for that and so many more things. God, family, and friends are what is most important in my life. Quad Grande White Mocha is my cup of tea (so to speak). I can drink a large Hume Lake milkshake faster than most... maybe all (record 29 seconds). This summer is going to be... dare I say epic... stop me, have a conversation with me, that's why I'm here.

Brent Graciano

My name is Brent Graciano, the friends call me Brent-skees. I live in San Diego. I work at the boys and girls club of San Marcos when I’m not at Hume. I have to have a cup of coffee a day to get through the day. Baseball and football is my thing. I came up with my youth group about 9 years ago, and have been coming up every summer since. I went through the Joshua Wilderness Institute last year here at Hume. God stretched me in ways I never thought possible. He taught me a whole lot about Him, and myself. I’m excited about this coming summer, and getting to spend time and getting to know all of you.

Emily Keirstead

Having grown up in a Christian home in San Jose, I heard about GOD a lot, but didn't know him until I understood who JESUS was and why it matters. It's been a long and continuous journey, but I'm beginning to see who I am in the Lord and it makes every restless day worth it. I'm a 2005 graduate of the Joshua Wilderness Institute Hume and a recent graduate of San Diego Christian College, with a BA in Communication. For the last year I've been researching Human Trafficking, specifically the Sex Trade and learning the culture of it, the fight against it and the spiritual warfare that continues it. My mind is learning preventative measures to combat this epidemic. My heart beats for those who are in need of grace and the unconditional love of God. I'm super excited to be a part of the Hume community and family this summer. Praying every day that this summer will be a changing one, a growing one, a reckless one for you and I both.

Richelle Latona

I love my family and friends so much that I am often overwhelmed. I've been told I am most passionate about my birthday. I love diet Pepsi, good food, and dark chocolate. I love throwing the football with my pop. I love to travel and I read whenever I have the opportunity. I love being at the beach, vacationing in Tahoe and water-ski days at the River. I love working in ministry with high school students. My heart loves the ministry at Hume because that is where I decided when I was in high school to get serious about my faith. I want to live my life so that others feel Christ's love. When I am not at Hume Lake, I work at Redwood Christian High School as a PE teacher and Dean of Girls.

Tiegra Boots

My name is Tiegra Boots. I'm from Las Vegas. I moved there when I was 10. Before that I lived in So. Cali, specifically Quail Valley. I have been at Hume Lake since Dec. 26th of 2007 working as a Red Coat for winter camps and an Instructor for Outdoor Education in the Spring. Before that I worked at Starbucks for 3 years. After Hume I'm making plans to move to Nashville, TN to work as a road manager for bands within the Christian Music Industry. I'm really excited about this summer. I love the opportunity that I have to work with High School girls this summer. One of my favorite things to do is share my experiences and knowledge of Christ with others. And I'm blessed to be able to do that with ladies this summer!

Jessica Graves

My name is Jessica Graves. I love cooking and snowboarding. I am a pastors daughter from the State of Maine, so basically I grew up in the ministry. I have been involved in foreign missions since my first mission trip to Central America when I was fourteen and was privileged to work with the home base headquarters of an mission to Africa while I was in my second year at Calvary Chapel Bible College, in Murrieta CA. My introduction to the ministry of Hume was actually from my Dad who was a speaker there. He told me about it and I had to come and experience it for myself. I have loved Hume Lake since the first time I went there. I love the way Hume Lake does ministry, and I believe they do it well. I am extremely blessed to be a part of their team. I love Jesus Christ. I believe that anyone who comes to really know Him will love Him too. So I'm all about growing in my knowledge of Him and making Him known at the same time. I am wicked stoked to see what God is going to do this summer.

Amy Gabel

I'm Amy but many of my friends call me Maymee (when your nephew can't say Amy.... well some nicknames just stick...) I'm from Castro Valley which is east of San Francisco in the bay area. I'm passionate about FOOD!!! namely sour candy, dark chocolate, s'mores and a great burger! I also love to travel. Some of my favorite travel destinations.....Disneyland, New York and almost anywhere on the east coast. What I love the most of all has nothing to do with travel or food.... it is seeing students discover who God is and what He has done for them! I love to see how their lives change when they accept Christ into their life. I feel so blessed to be able to leave my job as a flooring installer ( yes, small and mighty I am....) and spend the summer at Hume hanging out with you. Hume has been a special place for me in my walk with the Lord and I hope this summer you will discover how much He loves you.

Kevin Lanflisi

My name is Kevin Lanflisi and I was raised in Fairfield, CA, a small city in the east Bay Area. I just received a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from California State University Long Beach. I made a decision to follow Christ at Hume Lake 8 summers ago and have been walking with the Lord ever since. I love learning about anything, so feel free to kick some knowledge my way when you see me. I have gained a huge passion for writing poetry in the last year and a half and have participated in open mics in the Long Beach area. After the summer, I'm headed out to Quito, Ecuador to learn Spanish in hopes of equipping myself for a career in inner-city ministry.

Megan Fate

I'm from LONG BEACH, California. I like to take the mundane and make it creative. I like to approach each day as it having infinite opportunities to go above and beyond what anyone would expect in order to be a disciple wherever I'm at: bringing the 'Lord's Kingdom on earth as it is in Heaven.' Smiling, laughing, sports, and water balloon tosses are hobbies of mine. I have recently come to enjoy pita and hummus and am borderline obsessed with Blue Monster Energy Drinks. I have been at Hume for a part of every summer consecutively since I was in 6th grade (where I cried on the bus the entire way there b/c I was scared of being away from home).
